To the Nigerian Authorities We are appalled by the recent developments with the Nigerian woman Amina Lawal. We believe that all women are entitled to have a life without persecution and abhor this inhumane treatment of a human being. We believe that the Nigerian constitution guarantees the right to life and to freedom from torture and inhuman and degrading punishments and the right to a fair trial. We strongly urge the Nigerian authorities to reconsider and abide by their constitution. Consensual sex is not a violent act. In actual fact the only violent act surrounding this case is that of the brutality of stoning a woman to death. We would also like to point out to the Nigerian authorities that the sentence is also being imposed on, not only an innocent woman, but her child, her family and her friends. Where is the responsibility of the male involved? Yours faithfully Centre Co-ordinator
